GamerDad and family Welcome to GamerDad: Gaming with Children. My name is Andrew S. Bub - the GamerDad - and I've been writing about videogames, movies, and children for over 15 years now. After working as a magazine journalist, I switched gears to write about how media violence affects children, educating parents about them, and working closely with magazines, newspapers, major retailers and even politicians. GamerDad is an internationally recognized expert in this field. Games, movies and media are fun, kids and families love them, they aren't going away. So join me in cutting through the hype and lets have a real conversation about the things that matter: Video Games, Violent Media, and their supposed effect on children and families.

Ni no Super Bowl: Wrath of the Commercials

SUPERBOWLSo another Super Bowl has come and gone. I enjoy watching the Super Bowl every year; it’s like a national holiday nowadays. It’s usually a pretty good game, even if I don’t care about the teams. And sometimes the commercials are fun to watch, too. But I just like commercials in general. Yeah, I know, I’m crazy like that. Sometimes I think the commercials are better than the actual TV show! So as I like to do every year, here’s a play by play report of the commercials at this year’s Super Bowl that caught my eye.

Reader Request: Cary’s Favorite RPG Characters

terradiconI was running out of blog ideas and someone suggested that I list my favorite RPG characters. Now I know I’ve written blogs about my favorite Final Fantasy and Tales characters, but I haven’t listed all of them at once plus characters from other RPGs that I enjoy. So since I liked that reader’s idea, here’s a list of my favorite RPG characters. I tried to keep it limited to random monster encounter turn based battle RPGs, because if I listed characters from action RPGs like Zelda or Ys, my list would be WAY too long! So let’s get started.

Lode Runner Classic (iPad)

LODE_BOXMy first gaming system was an Apple ][+ back in the early 80’s, which seems weird to think about today since I’m mostly a console gamer now. But back then while everyone else was complaining about the poor port of Pac-Man for the Atari 2600, I was enjoying a near arcade perfect version on my old Apple PC. Some of my other favorites included Aquatron and Spare Change. Another one I played quite a bit was Lode Runner. Now you can enjoy the classic Lode Runner game on various iOS devices and smartphones (game played on iPad here).

Cary’s Favorite Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli Films

PANDANi no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch is an upcoming PS3 RPG title. The main draw of Ni no Kuni is that the characters and story were designed by Studio Ghibli, a very influential and prolific animation studio in Japan that has made many memorable films. I’m pretty selective about my anime and only like a few series, such as Astro Boy, original Dragon Ball, and not much else. But I do love the movies that Studio Ghibli puts out, so in honor of the release of Ni no Kuni, here are my favorites of theirs. Actually it’ll be a list of pretty much all their movies, since I like most of them for some reason or another anyway.
