Welcome to GamerDad: Gaming with Children. My name is Andrew S. Bub - the GamerDad - and I've been writing about videogames, movies, and children for over 15 years now. After working as a magazine journalist, I switched gears to write about how media violence affects children, educating parents about them, and working closely with magazines, newspapers, major retailers and even politicians. GamerDad is an internationally recognized expert in this field. Games, movies and media are fun, kids and families love them, they aren't going away. So join me in cutting through the hype and lets have a real conversation about the things that matter: Video Games, Violent Media, and their supposed effect on children and families.

Meet the Sim Bubs!
For Valentine’s Day, my daughter Maggie and I tried to recreate our own family with the PC version of the Sims 3. The result was this article, originally commissioned by WhatTheyPlay.com – reprinted here with their kind permission.
You’ve Given Me a GTA Headache
JARED, A “DAD” ASKS: My 9 year old son wants grand theft auto iv or grand theft auto ballad of gay tony for xbox 360. I want to know if the game is so bad for my son. I let him play games like x-men origins wolverine uncaged and prototype and saw and halo 3 and left 4 dead and call of duty. Also I got him gta chinatown wars for his dsi and he tells me its not bad. My son always tells me that it’s not bad it’s all fake. I take him to see movies like the friday the 13th remake and halloween 2 and watchmen and zombieland and my bloody valentine. Would the gta games be so bad for him?
Game Review: Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (DS)
Percy is a troubled kid who just can’t seem to fit in. But there’s a reason for that. One day, the creatures from Greek Mythology that Percy is studying come to life! Turns out that Percy is actually the son of Poseidon, Greek god of the sea. Someone has stolen Zeus’ lightning bolt, and Percy is to blame! Now the boy must use his new demi-god powers and rely on his newfound friends to save Mount Olympus and the world. Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief for Nintendo DS is an RPG based on the popular book and recently released movie of the same name.
GamerDad in iVillage – Best of ’09
iVillage (Momster.com, Parenting Magazine, Momtourage,
NBC-Universal), the largest “Mommy site” on the web – commissioned me to create a slideshow of my favorite games from 2009. There were a lot to choose from and I had to cover all ages but M-Mature. I think the article came out great. You can find it right here! FROM TYKES TO TEENS: BEST VIDEO GAMES OF THE YEAR!
The Games of Pinball Hall of Fame: The Williams Collection
I love video pinball games. Recently I picked up the Xbox 360 version of Pinball Hall of Fame: The Williams Collection for around 15 bucks on sale. I was surprised how addicting it was! So I thought I’d run through the dozen or so pinball tables on the collection!
Reading Early Bright
I believe strongly in helping my fellow authors and I believe even more strongly if the book in question is from an author I knew back in College (and whom I thought was cute) and I’m in a position to help. I will help. This is a parent/game site and this book has nothing to do with, still, consider finding a copy of Ami Silber’s Early Bright. The more they sell, the more likely we’ll hear from this author again. Go, buy one, read it, GamerDad asked you as a favor! Read on for a review – not by me:
What would they be rated now?
Zach P. Asked: Recently, I’ve been wondering about a few classic M rated games and I was wondering if your previous rulings still stood from the old site. The list is as follows, it might also be helpful to know which ones have filters: Call of Duty 4, Call of Duty 5, Gears of War, BioShock, Left 4 Dead, Resistance: Fall of Man, Resistance 2, Assassin’s Creed, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and Fallout 3. I know that, lately, your reviews have been a little more liberal so I was just requesting some re-reviews based on your new, liberal perspective.
What are those lovely children named?
My favorite letter EVER: Hailey asks: “what are those lovely children named?”
When we’re not calling them: “Stop that!” “Come here!” “Be nice!” and “Hey you!” they are called Henry and Maggie.
There’s a Super Bowl Party in my Tummy!
Well the Super Bowl has come and gone and I bet you all are wondering what Cary’s favorite commercial was from the game. You can find that out, plus more, in my new blog!
Game Review: 0-D Beat Drop (Xbox LIVE)
0-D Beat Drop (that reads “Zero-D”), is a falling block puzzle game with a music and rhythm twist. Rotate and match blocks of the same color in threes, but they won’t disappear if you just set them down. The trick is to press a button in time to the beat of the music. This will set the block down to the bottom immediately, and that’s when shapes of the same color disappear.
