GamerDad and family Welcome to GamerDad: Gaming with Children. My name is Andrew S. Bub - the GamerDad - and I've been writing about videogames, movies, and children for over 15 years now. After working as a magazine journalist, I switched gears to write about how media violence affects children, educating parents about them, and working closely with magazines, newspapers, major retailers and even politicians. GamerDad is an internationally recognized expert in this field. Games, movies and media are fun, kids and families love them, they aren't going away. So join me in cutting through the hype and lets have a real conversation about the things that matter: Video Games, Violent Media, and their supposed effect on children and families.

This Week in Games: May 3 – 9

klonoawiiWhile my personal pick of the week is Jagged Alliance for the DS, I simply had to put up the picture of Klonoa for the Wii in honor of Cary! The other releases include new Fallout 3 DLC called Broken Steel and a Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian game for pretty much every platform. The final release of interest is the Wii ‘New Play Controls’ re-release of the fun GameCube game Donkey Kong Jungle Beat. Check out the list! more…

Unplugged: New D&D – now free to download

testdrive-coverAlmost a year ago, Wizards of the Coast revealed the newest version of their popular role playing game, Dungeons and Dragons. This fourth edition of the game (known as 4E D&D) was designed to be easier to learn, faster playing, and better balanced. I’ve been playing the new version for about a year and my conservative favoritism has blossomed into a positive enthusiasm for the new system. If you haven’t taken a look at the new version or haven’t ever tried D&D before, now is your chance. Wizards of the Coast has just released everything you need to get started as a free download! Read on to find out the details…

Game Review: 101 in 1 – Explosive Megamix (DS)

101-in-1-explosive-megamixbox101 in 1, the name says it all. This title, published in the US by Atlus, is a large collection of games all on one cartridge. As a budget-priced title, this makes it one of the cost effective titles around in terms of price per game. But are the games worth even that much? Well, some are and some aren’t. Where you stand on each of those categories determines if this game is right for you.

This Week in Games: April 26 – May 2

stalin-vs-martiansI know that X-Men Origins: Wolverine is the big release this week … but how could I possibly resist putting the box for Stalin vs. Martians up front? X-Men Origins: Wolverine is being released for every platform known to man (I was honestly surprised there was no GBA version!), while Stalin vs. Martians is a quirky RTS game with a great sense of humor. Aside from those games, Velvet Assassin for the PC and XBOX360 has been highly anticipated and finally lands this week. There isn’t much more this week of note but that doesn’t mean there isn’t anything interesting, so check out the list! more…

Happy 38 to Me

Happy Birthday to me. Happy Birthday to me. Happy Birthday Dear me-eee. Happy Birthday to me!  4/25/71 I’m 38 and glad t0 still be here! Got tickets to Wilco from a friend, tickets to Neko Case from my wife. Drawings from my kids, oddities from my brother and sister in law, and a check, from my parents.  The powers that be have also given me my health, my family, and my beloved Basset Hound. I am healthy! Feels good!  Except I’ve heard from my children that I just might look like a monkey, and worse, smell like one too! I’d better look into that.

The Games (And Some Characters) of Samurai Shodown Anthology

samuraiRecently I picked up Samurai Shodown Anthology, a collection of SNK’s series of 2-D one on one fighters. It’s available for Wii, PSP, and PS2 I believe. I got the PS2 version because it was only 15 bucks. And as I always like to do with these things, here’s a blog detailing the games on this collection (SS 1 through 6), plus a little info on the series and my favorite characters.

Cary’s Anime Blog

dragonballLast weekend, me, little brother Jeff and a good friend went to go see the Dragonball Evolution live action movie based on the Dragon Ball cartoon. Mainly because we wanted to see how terrible it really was (don’t worry, we went to the early bird showing so we only had to pay five bucks for tickets). The movie was hilariously awful, meaning it was so bad it was funny. But more on that later. Anyway, after that movie I decided that I would write a blog about my favorite Japanese anime cartoons. So here they are!
