GamerDad and family Welcome to GamerDad: Gaming with Children. My name is Andrew S. Bub - the GamerDad - and I've been writing about videogames, movies, and children for over 15 years now. After working as a magazine journalist, I switched gears to write about how media violence affects children, educating parents about them, and working closely with magazines, newspapers, major retailers and even politicians. GamerDad is an internationally recognized expert in this field. Games, movies and media are fun, kids and families love them, they aren't going away. So join me in cutting through the hype and lets have a real conversation about the things that matter: Video Games, Violent Media, and their supposed effect on children and families.

Game Review: Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection (360, PS3)

sonic_boxDon’t let the name fool you, there’s more than just Sonic on this great collection! This is a compilation of around 40 or so 16-bit Sega Genesis console titles, with some unlockable 8-bit Sega Master System and arcade classics thrown in for good measure. With tons of extras and features, plus a low price tag, it’s a must-have collection for classic game fans.

The Games of Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection

Boo, Sonic! I just don’t care much for that blue hedgehog. Why couldn’t it have been called Tails’ Ultimate Genesis Collection? Or Opa-Opa’s Ultimate Genesis Collection? Flicky’s Ultimate Genesis Collection? What about Ulala’s Ultimate Genesis Collection? Those Sega characters are way better than Sonic, I think. Yeah, I know why they named it after Sonic, for marketing reasons (and wisely so). Anyway, if you want to know why I’m not Sonic’s biggest fan, and learn about all the classic goodness in his Ultimate Genesis Collection, just keep on reading!

Idol Thoughts: Top 36 Part 1

Over the last two nights we’ve experienced three hours dedicated to sending 75% of the people appearing home. That is right, in a new twist this year, we get to go back to pretty much the way things were done the first three seasons! For the past four seasons the judges have pared things down to twenty-four and then viewers voted on equally split sets of men and women. This was done to ensure an equal split in the Top 12 Finalists. This year the system works like this: there are three sets of twelve, and from that set the top male and female vote-getters go through along with the next top person whether male or female.

My Trials in Retro Game Challenge

Hey everyone! You’re not gonna BELIEVE what happened to me! I’m in big trouble! Last night I was playing Bikini Zombie Slay…er, I mean, I was playing Animal Crossing, yeah, Animal Crossing, and then all of a sudden, this giant floating head named Arino came on the screen! He sent me back in time to the 80’s and turned me into a little boy! And the only way I can get back to the present is to play a bunch of made-up 8-bit retro games and pass Arino’s challenges in them. I know that seems hard to believe, especially since you’re reading this blog now. What I did was handwrite this message back in the 80’s and mailed it to a friend in the future with instructions to post this on my blog when blogs get invented. I hope this works!

GamerFamily’s Week in Games

Comments Off on GamerFamily’s Week in Games

Hey all, just dropping a note to talk about “What WE’RE Playing” over here at GamerDad hideout. GamerDad, me, is (was?) playing Civilization Xbox 360, Bully (I like this one, can’t seem to stop) and a little bit of Left 4 Dead. Maggie is on Club Penguin, doing Math on Didj and playing Ravin’ Rabids TV Party, Henry is still on the Kart. GamerMom, still healing, has been spotted playing Super Monkey Ball (iPhone), and DS titles like Brain Age. Cooking Mama is still in that mix – pun intended. Click here to talk about what YOUR GamerFamily is playing. Join the discussion.
