Adventure Time: Hey Ice King! Why’d You Steal Our Garbage?!! (3DS, DS)
Adventure Time on Cartoon Network is a smash hit, with toys, plush, and DVDs selling like hotcakes. Now there is an Adventure Time video game for Nintendo’s portable handhelds (3DS version reviewed here). Play as adventurous boy Finn and his magical shape-shifting stretchy talking dog Jake as they go on a quest in the land of Ooo to teach the Ice King a lesson. You see, the Ice King stole Finn and Jake’s garbage so he could make a garbage princess, and they can’t allow that. On their way, Finn and Jake will interact with characters from the show, including Princess Bubblegum, Lemongrab, Marceline, and many more! So is the game any good? Absolutely! You’ll just have to read on to find out why.
XCom: Enemy Unknown (360, PS3, PC)
In 1994, Microprose released X-Com: UFO Defense in the US and titled it X-Com: Enemy Unknown elsewhere. The mix of turn based squad combat with home base long-term strategy became a huge hit. Initial follow up games did well but eventually lost their way leaving fans of the series pining for the good old days. Things have now come full circle with the “reboot” of the series under its original name, XCom: Enemy Unknown for newer consoles and the PC. While I went into the new game with some reservations, the core game is still there and the modern graphics (while a bit too gory for my tastes) serve to draw me deeper into the game.
Marvel Pinball: Civil War (360, PS3)
Based on the popular Marvel Comics story arc, side with Captain America and the Super Hero Freedom Act or Iron Man and the Super Hero Registration Act as you battle it out with flippers on the pinball table. Shoot up ramps and hit targets to get neutral heroes to side with your cause in this downloadable Pinball FX2 and Zen Pinball 2 add-on for PS3 and 360 (360 version reviewed here).
Jetpack Joyride (PS Minis)
The popular action game Jetpack Joyride, which was made by the same folks who brought us Fruit Ninja is now available as a PS Mini downloadable title for play on the PS3 or PSP. Play as a guy with a jetpack as you rampage through side scrolling levels, gathering coins, collecting goodies, and avoiding obstacles along the way.
Victorious: Taking the Lead (Wii, DS)
Victorious is a live action TV sitcom on Nickelodeon about a teen girl and her friends who attend a school for performing arts. Now you can get in on the act with Victorious: Taking the Lead for Wii and DS (DS version reviewed here). First, pick from two different characters from the show: Tori or Jade. There is a school play coming up and both of them want the lead part. So they’ll battle it out on the dance floor in this music/rhythm game.
Winx Club: Magical Fairy Party (DS)
Winx Club is a cartoon about girls who can transform into fairies, and they attend a school for fairies, too. And they, oh I don’t know, have adventures and learn lessons and stuff. Now your little girl can pretend to be one of the gang and help plan parties at their fairy school with Winx Club: Magical Fairy Party for Nintendo DS.
Chasing Aurora (Wii U)
Scribblenauts Unlimited (Wii U, 3DS)
The critically acclaimed and highly creative action puzzle game series Scribblenauts is now on the Wii U and 3DS with a dictionary’s worth of enhancements and improvements. You still play as Maxwell and use your magic notebook to write anything to make it appear in the game to help you collect Starites. But now they actually give you a reason for doing so. You see, Maxwell’s parents are adventurers and have discovered many amazing artifacts. That’s how Maxwell got his magic notebook. One day, a hungry old man begged Maxwell for food, but Maxwell played a dirty trick on him and wrote ‘rotten apple’ in his notebook to give to the old man. But the old man was actually a wizard and cast a spell on Maxwell’s sister Lily, gradually turning her into stone. The only way to save her sister is to collect Starites, and Starites only appear when you do good deeds for someone. So Maxwell sets out to use his magic notebook to do good deeds for everyone to save his ailing sister! (Wii U version reviewed here)
