Lola and Lucy’s Big Adventure is a downloadable interactive storybook for iPad. You and your kids can join Lola and Lucy, two bulldogs that live happily with their family. But when they overhear a sheepdog at the dog park talking about his duties at the farm, Lola and Lucy decide to go out into the world and find out what their real job is. But they eventually discover that their true purpose was where they were at all along. This storybook is unique in that it’s great for kids who are in that transitional stage from picture stories to chapter books. Around the middle of elementary school or so.

Dead or Alive 5 (PS3, 360)

One of the most popular fighting game franchises is back. Dead or Alive 5 for PS3 and Xbox 360 (PS3 version reviewed here) has all your favorite characters, moves, and other paraphernalia that makes the series so famous. While I’ve never played a previous game in the series, I can tell that this is one quality fighter, although it’s best enjoyed by pros of the genre only because of the high challenge level.
BreakQuest: Extra Evolution (PS Minis)

BreakQuest: Extra Evolution is a brick-busting paddle and ball game that dares to think outside the ‘blocks.’ Similar to classics like BreakOut and Arkanoid, move your paddle left and right on the bottom of the screen, ricocheting a ball to hit all the breakable objects in the level. Catch falling power-ups (and avoid power-downs), that fall when you break certain objects or take a long time in a stage. If you let the ball fall to the bottom of the screen, you’ll lose a life. Lose all balls and it’s Game Over.
Retro City Rampage (PS3, Vita, PC, 360, WiiWare)

Retro City Rampage is a love letter and parody of everything 8-bit. In the first five minutes of the game, you’ll see spoofs of Mega Man 2, Duck Hunt, Mario 2, and Frogger. Later on you’ll spot other parodies of Metal Gear, Bionic Commando, Skate or Die, Paperboy, and probably more that you might miss if you blink. Even the graphics and sound are designed to look like an 8-bit NES game. Anyone remember the first two Grand Theft Auto games that were 2-D and viewed from a top down perspective? That’s what this game plays like. Retro City Rampage is a downloadable title available for PS3, Vita, and PC, and later on Xbox 360 and WiiWare (PS3 version reviewed here).
NiGHTS Into Dreams HD Remake (360, PS3)

Rewind back to 1996. I had just finished my first year of college and started writing game reviews for a large metropolitan newspaper, which helped me decide on my major. Nintendo was about to rock the world with Super Mario 64, and people were beginning to use something called the “World Wide Web” to send “e-mails” on the PC. This was the world when NiGHTS was released for the SEGA Saturn. It was a beloved game by many a SEGA fan, and now you have the chance to play (or replay) an HD remake, downloadable on your 360 or PS3 (360 version reviewed here).

No, this is not a game about the popular 80’s band Journey (although they did have an arcade game back then, true story). This is a collection of games created by thatgamecompany, a developer who has made a few popular downloadable games for the PS3. From what I’ve seen, their games tend to me more artistic, goalless games that are more about the experience, not the challenge, of gaming. But I just like game collections, so in this blog, we’re going to go over what you can find on here.
