GamerDad and family Welcome to GamerDad: Gaming with Children. My name is Andrew S. Bub - the GamerDad - and I've been writing about videogames, movies, and children for over 15 years now. After working as a magazine journalist, I switched gears to write about how media violence affects children, educating parents about them, and working closely with magazines, newspapers, major retailers and even politicians. GamerDad is an internationally recognized expert in this field. Games, movies and media are fun, kids and families love them, they aren't going away. So join me in cutting through the hype and lets have a real conversation about the things that matter: Video Games, Violent Media, and their supposed effect on children and families.

Game Review: The Legendary Starfy (DS)

starfy_boxStarfy is a pretty legendary Nintendo video game character in Japan, appearing in several games over there since the Game Boy Advance. It must’ve taken the little starfish a long time to swim across the Pacific, but now he’s finally available in the US! In The Legendary Starfy, a mysterious rabbit creature wearing a spacesuit crashes through Starfy’s castle in the sky, and the space bunny’s being chased by some shadowy goons. It’s up to Starfy, his clam friend Moe, and little sister Starly to help their new friend and save the day!

Wolverandy

hugh-jackman-wolverineandySo, if we could see each other you’d know that I didn’t get a haircut or trim o’ the beard for the last 6 months.  About 4 months in I was tempted but then realized I could have a little fun.  Last Friday was haircutting time. I had a lot of fun with it. Then my best friend Zane got ahold of them and demonstrated that I’ve been underestimating his Photoshop skills. Seriously underestimating them!  Come on in bub, mind the claws!

The Newest Nintendo – DSi

nintendo-dsi-logoNintendo knows when they have a good thing going. They have dominated the handheld gaming market for many years, often with progressive upgrades rather than trying to build up an entirely new user base with each new handheld machine. This spring, they have released the newest upgrade to the DS line of handhelds, the DSi. By removing the Gameboy Advance slot, they have clearly staked out an attitude of looking towards the future rather than the past. Beyond that significant hardware reduction, there are numerous software improvements that make it a larger leap forward than the leap from Nintendo DS to the DS Lite.
